25 Encouraging Verses on the Power of Prayer in the Bible

This post is all about the power of prayer in the Bible!

Right? Because we're believing in and basing our entire life around someone we can't physically see.

However, once you learn the Truth from God's Word about the power of prayer, and start digging deep into your prayer life, you will begin to experience the power of god in your life (instead of attempting to rely on your own strength), and His presence will be undeniable!

In this post, I'll share with you what the Word of God says about prayer, why prayer is so powerful, and how to start incorporating prayer into your everyday life! This will give you a much closer relationship with God, and allow the will of God to reign down in your life!

What the Bible Says About Prayer

1. James 5:16 (NIV)
"Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective."


I love the reminder this verse gives us to lean on other believers in our prayer lives! What does this mean exactly? Well, number one.. To confess our sins to another believer and allow them to pray for us! When we do this, sin loses its' power over us. We expose it to the light and when our believing friend prays for us, we can be delivered from the sin in our life!


2. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."


This is the perfect verse for when you're feeling anxious. Paul encourages believers to replace anxiety with prayer. It's an exchange we get to receive -- we give God our worries through prayer and He replaces them with peace!


3. 1 John 5:14-15 (NIV)

"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him."


Have you ever wondered if God hears your prayers or if they're just hitting the ceiling and falling back down? Well, here, John assures us that when we pray according to God's will, He hears us! It's a promise that God is attentive to our prayers and answers them in alignment with His divine plan.


4. Mark 11:24 (NIV)

"Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours."

Jesus teaches us that faith is the component that activates prayer to work. Believing that we have already received what we ask for is a demonstration of trust in God's provision and timing.



5. Matthew 7:7-8 (NIV)
"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened."


Whatever it is we need, Jesus encourages us to be persistent in prayer over it. The promise is clear: those who actively seek, ask, and knock will experience God's response and provision.


6. Jeremiah 29:12 (NIV)
"Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you."


God assures His people that when they seek Him through prayer, He listens. This verse underscores the personal relationship God desires to have with us, marked by attentive listening!


7. Matthew 21:22 (NIV)

"If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer."

Once again, we see that faith is central to effective prayer. Jesus reinforces that belief is key to receiving what we ask for, encouraging us to trust in God's ability to answer.

 

8. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

"Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus."

Paul outlines a life of continual joy, prayer, and gratitude. These actions are not occasional but are meant to be a constant part of a believer's life, reflecting God's will for us.

 

9. John 14:13-14 (NIV)

"And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it."

Have you ever wondered why we pray "in Jesus' name"? Jesus promises that prayers made in His name will be answered, with the purpose of glorifying the Father. Praying in Jesus' name means aligning our requests with His character and will.

 

10. Psalm 145:18 (NIV)

"The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth."

This verse reassures us of God's proximity and readiness to respond to sincere prayers. Calling on God in truth implies honesty and integrity in our relationship with Him.

 

 

Powerful Prayers in the Bible

1. The Lord's Prayer

Matthew 6:9-13

"This, then, is how you should pray: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'"

 

If you ever have doubts that you're praying the "right" way, or don't know what to say when you pray... You can always pray this prayer Jesus actually told us to pray, Himself!

One amazing way to pray every day is to break this prayer down into pieces and elaborate on them, according to your own life.

    For example:

    "And forgive us our debts -- Lord, forgive me for X, Y, Z...".

    "And lead us not into temptation -- Father, I've felt very tempted to sin in *blank* way, I thank You for delivering me from that temptation."

     

    2. Hannah's Prayer for a Son

    1 Samuel 1:10-11

    "In her deep anguish, Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. And she made a vow, saying, 'Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.'"

     

    This prayer can be used as an example to go off of when you're desperately desiring something and it's causing you deep sadness.

     

     

    3. Solomon's Prayer for Wisdom

    1 Kings 3:6-9

    "Solomon answered, 'You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day. Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?'"

     

      The part that I bolded above is a great prayer to pray regularly for the Lord's wisdom and discernment!

       

      4. Daniel's Prayer of Confession

      Daniel 9:4-19

      "I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed: 'Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, we have sinned and done wrong.

      We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away from your commands and laws. We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes and our ancestors, and to all the people of the land.

      'Lord, you are righteous, but this day we are covered with shame—the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, both near and far, in all the countries where you have scattered us because of our unfaithfulness to you.

      We and our kings, our princes and our ancestors are covered with shame, Lord, because we have sinned against you. The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him; we have not obeyed the Lord our God or kept the laws he gave us through his servants the prophets.

      All Israel has transgressed your law and turned away, refusing to obey you. 'Therefore the curses and sworn judgments written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against you. You have fulfilled the words spoken against us and against our rulers by bringing on us great disaster.

      Under the whole heaven nothing has ever been done like what has been done to Jerusalem. Just as it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come on us, yet we have not sought the favor of the Lord our God by turning from our sins and giving attention to your truth.

      The Lord did not hesitate to bring the disaster on us, for the Lord our God is righteous in everything he does; yet we have not obeyed him.

      'Now, Lord our God, who brought your people out of Egypt with a mighty hand and who made for yourself a name that endures to this day, we have sinned, we have done wrong.

      Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts, turn away your anger and your wrath from Jerusalem, your city, your holy hill. Our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors have made Jerusalem and your people an object of scorn to all those around us.

      'Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant. For your sake, Lord, look with favor on your desolate sanctuary. Give ear, our God, and hear; open your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears your Name.

      We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, hear and act! For your sake, my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name.'"

       

      Are you feeling shameful for something sinful you've done? Use this prayer as a guide to pray in repentance and know that the Jesus has forgiven you! When He died on the cross, He forgave all of your sins!

       

      5. David's Prayer of Repentance

      Psalm 51

      "Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.

      Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.

      Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place. Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

      Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

      Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

      Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you. Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.

      Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise. You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.

      May it please you to prosper Zion, to build up the walls of Jerusalem. Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous, in burnt offerings offered whole; then bulls will be offered on your altar."

       

      This is a beautiful prayer to pray regularly and strengthen your relationship with the Lord.

       

      6. Jabez's Prayer for Blessing

      1 Chronicles 4:10

      "Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, 'Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.' And God granted his request."

       

      This is a simple prayer we can pray regularly as well!

       

      7. David’s Prayer of Praise

      1 Chronicles 29:10-13

      "David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying, 'Praise be to you, Lord, the God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name.'"

       

        What a perfect example of praise to our Heavenly Father!

         

        9. Simeon's Prayer (Nunc Dimittis)

        Luke 2:29-32

        "Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel."

        I love that Luke uses the words "as you promised." I feel like this shows God an extra amount of faith that we're believing He'll do what He said He'll do.

         

        10. Elijah's Prayer on Mount Carmel

        1 Kings 18:36-37

        "At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: 'Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.'"

         

        This prayer is a great reminder that, ultimately, we want the result of what we pray to give God glory. "So these people will know that You, Lord, are God!"

        Ask yourself in your prayer life, "Am I praying with pure motives? Do I want what I'm asking for to bring glory to God? Or is this just for me?" 

         

        11. Moses' Prayer for Israel

        Exodus 32:11-13

        "But Moses sought the favor of the Lord his God. 'Lord,' he said, 'why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand? Why should the Egyptians say, "It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth"? Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people.

        Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore by your own self: "I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and I will give your descendants all this land I promised them, and it will be their inheritance forever."'"

         

        I love, once again, in this prayer, Moses is stating what God had already promised; showing His faith in God to come through on what He said.

         

        12. Paul's Prayer for the Ephesians

        Ephesians 3:14-21
        "For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name.
        I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.
        And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
        Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen."

         

        What a powerful prayer to pray over your loved ones you want to see grow in the Lord (or yourself!)

         

          13. Hezekiah's Prayer for Healing

          Isaiah 38:2-3
          "Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, 'Remember, Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.' And Hezekiah wept bitterly."
